How Many Hives Per Charge?

Lorob Bees' runtime estimates at 65°F (room temperature):

Cold air pulls heat away from the unit and cuts into those numbers, and older batteries won't hold as much charge as new ones. For cool-weather treatments, the InstantVap Original Insulation roof can boost efficiency by up to 20%. If you're treating a big yard, bring a second charged battery.

How It Compares

The InstantVap 18V Compact matches the Original's speed — about 25 seconds at 2 g, 45 seconds at 4 g — in a smaller, lighter, better-balanced body with spare plunger storage, but it uses an LED status light instead of a voltage meter.

The InstantVap Lite is the most affordable unit and runs on a 3Ah battery, but it's slower — about 25–30 seconds at 2 g and roughly a minute and a half at 4 g. It suits hobbyists with up to about 20 hives.

For commercial yards, the InstantVap 18V Turbo treats a 2 g dose in about 10 seconds (20 seconds at 4 g).

Seasonal Use

Oxalic acid vapor reaches nearly every mite riding on adult bees, but it can't penetrate wax cappings — so it works best when the colony has little or no capped brood. Plan your treatments for late fall into the broodless winter cluster, early spring before brood rearing ramps up, after you hive a swarm, or during a brood break after swarming or requeening.

How to Use

1. Put on your respirator before you start (see Safety below).
2. Insert a fully charged battery and let the unit preheat to about 445°F. Keep an eye on the voltage display throughout.
3. Fill the plunger with 1–4 g of oxalic acid.
4. Insert the stem through a drilled ¼-inch hole or the hive entrance.
5. Tap the plunger to release the oxalic acid, which vaporizes immediately. A 2 g dose takes about 25 seconds; a 4 g dose takes about 45 seconds.
6. Move to the next hive once the unit is back up to temperature.

Dosing guide: As a starting point, most single deep or single medium hives run around 2 g. Larger colonies on double deeps can go up to the full 4 g. Adjust within that range based on colony size and mite pressure.

Oxalic acid powder vs. EZ-OX tablets: Many beekeepers assume tablets are the easier choice, but this plunger is built for OA powder. Tablets don't perform as well in this unit and cost more per treatment — powder is the better option on both counts. We carry EZ-OX oxalic acid powder for exactly this use.

Safety

Oxalic acid vapor is an acid gas, and you should never breathe it. A dust mask won't stop it — you need a respirator fitted with acid gas cartridges, like our Half-Face Respirator with Oxalic Acid Respirator Cartridges. A half-face mask protects your lungs but leaves your eyes exposed, so add eye protection or use a full-face respirator. Stand upwind of the hive while you treat, and use only EPA-registered oxalic acid.

Product Details

The Original includes one plunger. Add a second if you'd like to keep moving between hives without stopping to reload.
